Hugh Jackman in his latest film “Reminiscence” will take you on a journey through your memories — even if there’s a past you’d be best served to forget. In an era dominated by familiar IP, this summer’s Reminiscence promises to be a breath of fresh air. Or a hyperventilating gasp, based on the tense first trailer.
“We’re going on a journey through memory,” Jackman says in the trailer, in a meditative noir voice. “All you have to do is follow my voice.”
“Reminiscence” comes from director and writer Lisa Joy, who co-created “Westworld” and cast Jackman as “a private investigator of the mind,” someone who helps his clients access lost memories and relive them and their emotions. But he soon becomes obsessed with the past when he takes on a new client and tries to find the truth about a woman’s disappearance.
In the film — which takes place in a near-future where Miami is largely underwater — Jackman stars as Nick Bannister, who helps his clients access lost memories through some brain-mining technology. Bannister then meets and falls in love with a new client Mae (played by Rebecca Ferguson) who soon vanishes. Having peered inside her mind, Bannister then sets out to solve the mystery of Mae’s disappearance, leading him into a vast and violent conspiracy.
OLD (2021) MOVIE TRAILER REVIEW
In addition to Jackman and Ferguson, Reminiscence stars Thandiwe Newton, Cliff Curtis, Marina de Tavira, Brett Cullen, and Angela Sarafyan.
“Reminiscence” was inspired shortly after the death of her grandfather and her desire to understand how nice it would be to go back and feel exactly the way you felt when you first experienced those memories. She described caring for her daughter and wishing she could bottle her specific smell, knowing that she’d never be able to recreate that specific moment.
Reminiscence hits theaters and HBO Max on Sept. 3.
