Harlem Bespoke: Those following some of the food sites on social media might have noticed that Birria Tacos were the talk of the town in the past year or so. Now a version of the beloved dish has arrived in Central Harlem at a new restaurant on Lenox at the corner of 113th Street. We stopped by the new Los 3 Charros over the weekend and tried out a different version of the classic to debut in the neighborhood
So what is birria exactly? The regional dish from Jalisco, Mexico is usually made for only special occasions and is probably the only dipping taco specialty out there. Basically the birria is a spiced, seasoned stew of tender goat meat that is often served up in inside a grilled crispy pan fried taco with the soup consommé on the side for extra flavor. Those taco shells are actually fried using the orange crimson oil from the stew and have a nice reddish hue to them. There is also melted Oaxacan cheese inside so the tacos are really over the top.
Most of the flavor-dense stew recipes out there are require goat meat but the beef version was offered up at the Lenox Avenue location. So how was it? We actually have had excellent goat birria before and must say the beef version is a little bit more on the underwhelming side. The tacos were not very fried either and the consommé was on the lighter side. Everything was solid but not as exciting as some other places in the city which we will go over in the future.
